TUFAS.
from a sign by the lake:
“Mono Lake’s strangely beautiful tufa towers result from calcium-rich spring water bubbling up from the bottom of the lake into the alkaline lake water.
Calcium carbonate (limestone) towers are constantly forming underwater. These tufa towers formed when the lake level was higher.”
(I couldn’t get a decent picture of the taller, more statuesque towers… it required like a half-hour hike and it was cold and i was not dressed properly :c)
